Am I Eligible for a “Service Connected” Disability Claim?

There are eligibility requirements that must be met to file a service connected disability claim. First you must be a veteran as required by the Department of Veterans Affairs. This is generally anyone who served in the military, naval or air services and was not discharged or released dishonorably. Secondly, your disability must be “service connected.” This requirement is the hardest to prove and in general is any disability (physical or psychological) that was caused by or aggravated due to active duty or training.

There are many ways to establish a service connected disability. Among them include showing:

  • Direct connection to an injury during service
  • Aggravation of a pre-existing condition or injury
  • Legal presumption for certain conditions such as agent orange
  • Treatment in a VA hospital or facility

Service connected disabilities often include:

  • Depression/anxiety
  • Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
  • Gulf War Syndrome
  • Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI)
  • Neurological/brain disorders
  • Hearing problems
  • Back injuries
  • Knee injuries
  • Orthopedic injuries
  • Gunshot/shrapnel wounds
  • Amputations
  • Exposure to radiation/cancer
