Research finds link between obesity and cancer risk

Many people in Fayetteville understand that obesity is not good for your health, but they may not realize that the health problems associated with obesity go beyond heart disease and diabetes. Recent research has shown that obesity can be linked to an increased chance of developing 13 different kinds of cancer. The American Cancer Society reports that approximately 8% of all cancers in the nation have a link to excess body weight. Moreover, cancer survivors who are obese have an increased chance of their cancer returning and have less of a chance of surviving a second time.

This is significant, as cancer is well known to be a disease that can take a great toll on your health. Moreover, the treatment of cancer can cause health problems in and of itself. Many people who suffer from cancer find that they cannot work for an extended period -- a year or more -- or that their condition is terminal. When this happens, they may want to seek Social Security disability benefits for illness.

The Social Security Administration recognizes that cancer is a disabling condition and includes it in its Listing of Impairments. This means those who meet the qualifications under the Listing of Impairments will be deemed disabled for disability benefits purposes. In addition, many types of cancer fall under the SSA's Compassionate Allowance program. This means that these applications will be expedited, as the disease meets the SSA's qualifications for disability benefits.

Being diagnosed with cancer can be scary, and it is a condition that can befall even those who were previously of good health. While it is always wise to take care of your body, eat well and exercise, nothing can guarantee that you won't develop a disabling condition, whether it is cancer or another disease. Being diagnosed with a serious ailment can be very stressful, especially if the ailment renders you disabled. Fortunately, it is possible to seek SSD benefits, which could relieve some of the financial stress associated with being unable to work for an extended period.
