Process for determining VA disability benefits

On Behalf of | Jun 6, 2019 | Veterans' Issues

There are many people in Georgia who are either actively in the military or were active duty members at one point in time. These people serve a very important service for our country, but it is a dangerous one and many things can happen when people are performing their duties. Many people come home from tours with significant injuries that can be a lifelong issue for some people. These injuries can make life very difficult and limit their ability to earn income as well.

People who find themselves in this unfortunate situation may be able to receive VA disability benefits though which can be very valuable for injured veterans. However, in order to receive these benefits they must meet certain requirements and also apply for them. This process can be a complicated one and take time as well.

The process starts with submitting an application. After the application is submitted, the person will receive notification that it was in fact submitted. After the application is received it will be go through an initial review. Then there will be an evidence gathering stage where the applicant will be asked to submit medical records from health care providers and governmental agencies. This step could be repeated if more information is needed. Then all the evidence will be reviewed.

A decision on the application will then be made, a packet detailing the decisions will be put together and mailed to the applicant. If the applicant disagrees with the decision there is an appeal process as well.

Unfortunately there are many veterans in Georgia who are injured while in active duty. These people may be dealing with the injuries long after returning from active duty, which can have a major impact on their ability to earn a living and support themselves and their families. These people may be entitled to VA disability benefits though which can help ease these financial burdens. Experienced attorneys understand the application process and may be able to help guide one through it.
