VA benefits for children of veterans with birth defects

There are many injuries and illnesses that do not really show signs of affecting people's lives in Georgia until well after the injury or illness was first incurred. Sometimes cancer and other illnesses can be present for a lengthy period of time before people realize they have it. Also, sometimes people suffer injuries that may not seem very serious at the time but develop into a more serious problem over time. This is true for veterans coming home after serving in various countries.

Some of the effects of the elements the veterans were exposed to do not form until much later and some are passed down to their children as well. Because of exposure to certain chemicals, their children may have birth defects. One common one is spina bifida, which can be caused by Agent Orange. So, veterans who served in Vietnam or near the DMZ zone in Korea who have children with spina bifida and other birth defects may be entitled to VA disability benefits to help treat the birth defect.

In order to receive the benefits, the parent must have served in Vietnam between 1968 and 1975 or in Korea near the DMZ between 1968 and 1971 and the child was conceived after service in those areas. The parent then must apply for benefits by showing the birth certificate, proof of their service during those times and medical documentation of the spina bifida or other birth defect. The children may be entitled to benefits for health care, monetary compensation and job training as well.

There are many veterans in Georgia and they have provided a great service for our country and made large personal sacrifices. Sometimes these veterans are exposed to chemicals that can cause health complications in themselves and even their children. This can create health problems long after the veterans' service has ended. Veterans who suffer from these health problems may be entitled to compensation through VA disability benefits. The application process can be complicated though and experienced attorneys may be able to guide one through it.
