Researchers discover biological evidence of fibromyalgia

There are more and more people being diagnosed with fibromyalgia in North Carolina every year, but there are still some doctors who consider fibromyalgia to be a psychosomatic condition. This means that many doctors believe individuals with fibromyalgia are not actually in pain, but that they merely think they are in pain. After some recent research was published on the condition, however, many doctors will likely be changing their minds on this pain condition.

Fibromyalgia can be a very serious condition, and certainly one that can keep someone in Fayetteville from working. When the pain of fibromyalgia becomes too much, many people will file for disability benefits to ensure that they still have some money coming in. Without work and without benefits, many people would be unable to pay for their medical treatments, medications and therapies, much less some of their everyday basic living expenses like rent. But to receive benefits means a diagnosis from a doctor who knows fibromyalgia is a real condition.

This new research indicates that women who have been diagnosed with this condition have a neurovascular structure that is far different from individuals without fibromyalgia. Specifically, the women have more sensory nerve fibers around the capillaries in the hands. Not only does this pathology prove that fibromyalgia is not psychosomatic, but it can also be used to find therapies to lessen pain.

More research certainly needs to be done before all doctors will truly believe that fibromyalgia is more than just someone being a hypochondriac, but it is an important first step and, thus, an important step toward easing the disability benefits process for people with fibromyalgia.
