Veterans can receive SSDI benefits too

On Behalf of | Nov 12, 2013 | Social Security Disability, Social Security Disability

Yesterday the country honored our nation’s former and current veterans for their service and dedication to America. Veterans make several sacrifices during their service, including risking their lives, and many veterans come home with disabling injuries that make it difficult to work.

Veterans who have become disabled due to an injury can receive veteran’s benefits from the Department of Veterans Affairs. However, veterans and current military members are also eligible to receive Social Security Disability benefits from the Social Security Administration.

SSDI benefits can help disabled veterans and military personnel pay for monthly expenses that would be difficult to afford otherwise. Applying for SSDI benefits can seem complicated but veterans should know that there is an expedited application process for veterans and military service members. This process allows their SSDI applications to be reviewed much faster by the administration.

Military members who were disabled during active duty on or after October 1, 2001, are eligible to have their applications expedited. Military members should know that their children and spouses may also be eligible to receive benefits through the SSA.

It is important to note that this disability application process is different than the benefits process through the VA. The requirements for an SSDI application are different than the VA disability benefits so it is important for military members and veterans to become familiar with the application process and make sure they provide the medical evidence required to review the SSDI application.

Applying for SSDI  benefits can seem complex and challenging. Individuals may want to consult a Social Security Disability attorney for help during their initial application as well as if their claim has been denied to see if they should appeal their denied application.
