How long does it take to receive SSD benefits?

When Georgia residents are in need of serious help, they often cannot afford to wait for that help to arrive. This is often the case when it comes to financial matters, as a person may not be able to do anything to delay his or her financial needs while the person waits for financial assistance to arrive.

When it comes to Social Security disability benefits, a procedure is in place with the Social Security Administration for a person to receive financial assistance for a disability. As discussed last week in this blog, the Social Security Administration will evaluate a person’s application for benefits based on a multi-step process that looks at whether the person is disabled.

However, one question that is often asked is how long it takes to actually receive the SSD benefits after the Social Security Administration approves a person’s application. After all, as mentioned above, individuals often need the financial assistance that comes with the benefits as soon as they can get it.

Typically, there is a five-month waiting period from when a person’s application for benefits is approved and when the person will begin receiving those benefits. Accordingly, the first benefit payment would be received six months after the agency finds the person’s disability began.

Take, for example, a person whose disability begins on June 15. That person’s first benefit would be paid for the month of December, with the person actually receiving the payment in January of the following year.

Accordingly, individuals should understand there is a waiting period before the benefit payments will begin. This may only increase the need for the person to act sooner rather than later when it comes to filling out the application for benefits.
