How do brain injuries affect victims?

Many scientists throughout the world agree that the human brain is one of the most complex systems known to man. It is crucial to human life, and we have only just begun to get an understanding of just how complex it is and how it works. But, like every other part of the human body, it can be damaged, and a damaged brain could lead to very serious or catastrophic results.

Brain injuries are not uncommon in the United States. Victims throughout the country, including many from Fayatteville, Georgia, Fayette County and the Atlanta, Georgia, area know just how serious a brain injury could be.

Serious brain injuries, often called traumatic brain injuries, or TBIs, account for as many as 1.7 million cases each year in the United States. While some are relatively minor and only lead to minor symptoms, such as headaches, nausea, temporary memory loss and dizziness, others are far more serious. One of the problems with brain injuries is that it is often difficult to diagnose the severity of a head injury. But, failing to properly diagnose an injury could lead to catastrophic or even deadly results.

A swollen or damaged brain could lead to a blood clot or other medical problems that could leave a victim with long-term or life-long disabilities. Traumatic brain injuries are among the listed conditions for eligibility for Social Security disability benefits for injuries. A victim must prove that the injury is serious enough that they are not able to maintain gainful employment, and that the injury is expected to last at least a year or end in death.
