Back problems may qualify you for Social Security disability

Anyone suffering from back problems in Georgia knows how difficult it can be to even get up in the morning, let alone spend a full day at work. If you have chronic back pain that prevents you from working, you may be eligible for Social Security Disability benefits.

The Social Security Administration will evaluate your back pain based on various criteria. First, the SSA will look at the objective signs and symptoms surrounding your back pain. Your goal is to show that your back problems are caused by a medically determinable impairment. To prove this, you will need to submit evidence, including MRIs, CT scans, X-rays to show any fractures, spinal defects, or bone degeneration.

The SSA will also look at how your back problems are impacting your everyday life and your ability to work. Generally, the SSA will conduct a Residual Functional Capacity (RFC) assessment to determine your functional limitations. Examiners will look at your ability to stand, sit, walk, and do other basic tasks. For example, if your back problems prevent you from bending over and picking up items or prevent you from being able to sit in one place for more than a couple of minutes, the SSA may determine that your functional limitations prevent you from working full time.

The SSA will consider the medical evidence you submit, statements by your doctors, and evidence showing your ability to do everyday activities and determine whether your back pain qualifies you for SSD benefits. A disability benefits attorney can help build your case and prove to the SSA that your back problems make it impossible for you to work a full-time job. If your claim is successful, the SSA will award you benefits each month to help support you and your family.
