Study hopes to find ways to diagnose and treat brain trauma

With the number of former professional football players filing lawsuits against the NFL. there may be many people in Athens wondering just how serious brain injuries can be. As more information about brain trauma and chronic traumatic encephalopathy becomes available it may be easier to diagnose and treat some of these medical conditions earlier, potentially staving off disability claims.

Veterans' backlog decreases by 20 percent since all-time high

When veterans apply for disability benefits, just like any civilian applying for federal disability benefits in Atlanta, they expect to have their claim looked at, fairly adjudicated and their benefits distributed in a timely fashion. Unfortunately, just like civilians applying for federal disability benefits, veterans' disability claims are facing a disturbing delay. Earlier this month, the Department of Veterans Affairs said there were 490,000 veterans who have waited more than 125 days without hearing anything about their claims.

Unemployment for people with mental illness as high as 90 percent

The figures seem shocking, especially since many people in Peachtree City know at least one person with mental illness who has very few problems at work, yet unemployment rates for people living with mental illness are disgustingly high. The highest estimate is 90 percent, but the lowest isn't that much lower, only falling to 70 percent. Certainly for some people with severe mental illness work is out of the question and disability benefits are a must, but there are others who cannot work because of stigma alone.

1 year of retroactive veterans' benefits with new program

There are a number of people in Atlanta who have bravely served our country; from Korea to Iraq, these soldiers have fought for our country and given up a lot. Many of them have also been injured and it is the federal government's responsibility to care for these soldiers. Although it may not have been top of mind when they signed up for the military, soldiers know that they are entitled to veterans' disability benefits if they are injured while serving our country.

Football associations hope to reduce traumatic brain injuries

Nearly everyone in Roswell has heard of the numerous former football players who are suing the NFL after they say the professional football association had lied about the danger concussions could cause among players. Although it may seem to some that these lawsuits have nothing to do with disability, they are, at the heart, about a very common cause of disability in the United States: traumatic brain injuries.
